'Private Bin' Pokolbin Dry Red Shiraz
Special Cellar Door Release

Vintage: 2007

Shiraz

NEW VINTAGE RELEASE: The 2007 Private Bin Pokolbin Dry Red Shiraz continues Tulloch's tradition of producing premium quality, old vine Shiraz from the Hunter Valley under this label. This wine was the iconic Australian wine of its time, enjoying a reputation that was second to none. As the late Len Evans remembered in a Gourmet Traveller article in 2006, "At the end of the 60's, Grange was the same price as Tulloch's Private Bin (a classic Hunter red)."

The third release of this wine since the resurrection of the famous old label in 2005, has once again been highly anticipated following the sell out of the 2006 vintage. The 'Private Bin' is produced in small quantities and released exclusively through the Tulloch Cellar Door only. The 2007 vintage pays hommage to the late Harry Gena Brown (1918-1999), who worked from a young age for the legendary J.K. Walker M.B.E. in his Sydney, Rhinecastle Cellars. Harry later purchased the wholesale portion of Rhinecastle Cellars, which he built into the well known and respected, H.G. Brown Wine Company.

This typically medium-bodied Shiraz is produced from grapes grown in the parish of Pokolbin , some vines of which are in excess of 100-years-old and sourced from one of the Hunter Valley's most historic vineyards, the Tallawanta Vineyard. This vineyard dates back to the early 1890's, ensuring a low yield of premium quality Hunter Shiraz. The wine is deep ruby red in colour with aromas of plum, blackberry and spice, with hints of typical Hunter earthiness and coffee on the nose. Medium bodied on the palate with a soft supple mouthfeel, this is a well balanced wine exhibiting the elegance and complexity on the palate that is synonymous with traditional styles of Hunter Shiraz.

The 1954 vintage of the Private Bin Pokolbin Dry Red won first prize for Claret, first prize for Burgundy and the Best Red Wine of the Show at the 1956 Royal Sydney Wine Show, cementing its reputation as one of the great red wines of its time. The first re-release of the Private Bin in 2005, commemorated Hector, who was responsible for first bottling the Tulloch Wines under their own label and bringing Pokolbin to prominence in the Australian wine industry. The second release in 2006 was dedicated to the legendary, J.K. Walker M.B.E, a renowned wine merchant and restaurateur. James Halliday, arguably Australia's most famous and acclaimed wine critic, wrote about the Pokolbin Dry Red in his latest publication, 'The Australian Wine Companion 2008', saying, "The return of the classic Dry Red and Private Bin Dry Red labels brings back memories of the great wines of the 1950's and 60's, and is a sign of the continuing resurgence of this brand." $40/bottle at cellar door.

This wine is yet to be entered in any wine shows

Superb with any red meat, but a particularly good match with lamb.
